A father and his two teenage children say they recorded a brief video of an unidentified creature while hiking near a wooded area in the Pacific Northwest last month. The family posted the clip on a social‑media platform, describing the animal as “large, covered in dark hair, and moving quickly on two legs.” According to the father, who identified himself only as “Mike,” the sighting occurred at dusk on a trail near the town of Oakridge, Oregon. He told local news outlets that the creature disappeared into the underbrush after a few seconds, leaving the family “shaken but fascinated.” The video, which runs for roughly twelve seconds, shows a dark shape briefly emerging from foliage, standing upright before retreating. No clear facial features or distinctive markings are visible, and the resolution is low, making definitive identification difficult.

Researchers from the University of Washington’s Department of Anthropology were contacted for comment. Dr. Laura Chen, a primatologist who studies large mammals, said that without higher‑quality footage or physical evidence, the clip cannot be used to confirm the presence of an unknown hominid species. “Many known animals—such as black bears standing on hind legs, large dogs, or even human hikers—can appear similar in low‑light video,” she explained. Dr. Chen noted that the region is home to a healthy population of black bears, which occasionally rear up to assess threats, and that sightings of bears are sometimes misinterpreted as cryptid encounters. She added that rigorous scientific verification would require multiple independent recordings, clear anatomical details, and ideally, physical traces such as hair or footprints.

The family’s claim has attracted attention from amateur cryptozoology groups, several of which posted supportive comments on the video’s page. One online forum dedicated to Bigfoot research posted a thread suggesting the creature matches “classic Sasquatch morphology,” citing the upright stance and the apparent lack of a tail. However, experts caution that such forums often operate without peer review and may emphasize anecdotal evidence over systematic analysis. The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife declined to open an investigation, stating that no reports of wildlife disturbances or missing persons have been filed in the area, and that the agency’s resources are focused on documented species and habitat protection.

The incident reflects a broader pattern of alleged Bigfoot sightings that surface periodically across North America, especially in heavily forested regions. While folklore surrounding large, hair‑covered hominids dates back centuries, modern claims typically rely on brief visual accounts, footprints, or audio recordings, none of which have withstood scientific scrutiny. Anthropologists and wildlife biologists emphasize that extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence, and that the burden of proof lies with the claimants. In the meantime, the family remains convinced they captured something unusual, and they have expressed willingness to cooperate with any future investigations, should more substantial evidence emerge.
