A recent tally compiled by the New Jersey State Police’s Aviation Unit indicates that more than 3,000 UFO sightings have been logged across the state since 1990, according to the agency’s public‑release data. The town of Toms River accounts for the highest number of reports, with 274 incidents recorded, followed by other coastal communities such as Atlantic City and Cape May.

The police department’s database notes that most sightings involve lights or objects moving at speeds and trajectories that witnesses describe as “unusual.” However, the agency has not released any photographic or video evidence, and it classifies the reports as “unidentified” rather than confirming any extraterrestrial origin. Analysts with the Federal Aviation Administration have previously warned that many such observations can be attributed to conventional aircraft, drones, weather balloons, or astronomical phenomena like meteors and planets.

The New Jersey 101.5 news outlet cited the police figures in a recent broadcast, but independent verification of the numbers is limited. Similar statewide reporting efforts in other U.S. regions have shown comparable volumes of unexplained aerial reports, often resolved after investigation. Researchers at the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) have expressed interest in the data but have not yet conducted a formal analysis.

While the sheer quantity of reports may suggest a pattern, experts caution that without corroborating physical evidence, the sightings remain anecdotal. The state police continue to document reports as part of routine public safety monitoring, and they encourage witnesses to provide as much detail as possible.
