Passenger reports sudden object forces Hawaiian flight to veer

A passenger on a Mokulele Airlines commuter flight said the aircraft had to make an abrupt right turn to avoid an unidentified object that seemed to emerge from a cloud bank while the plane was traveling between Molokai and Maui on July 9, 2026. The woman described the sighting as startling and said both pilots looked at each other before steering the plane away.

The airline has not confirmed that a near‑miss occurred, and officials from the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board have said they have found no evidence of another aircraft or known drone in the vicinity at the time. Mokulele Airlines reportedly denied that any such incident took place.

Drone specialist Timo Sullivan, quoted by Hawaii News, argued that a drone collision with a commercial aircraft over Hawaii would be unlikely because FAA regulations separate flight paths much like lanes on a highway, preventing aircraft from entering each other’s routes.

No additional data, such as radar recordings or cockpit voice transcripts, have been released to substantiate the passenger’s account, and investigators have not identified the object. The incident remains under review, with authorities noting that without concrete evidence the cause cannot be determined.
