SpaceX Upper Stage Set to Strike Moon This Week

A spent upper stage from a SpaceX launch is predicted to impact the lunar surface near Einstein Crater on Wednesday, travelling at roughly 5,400 mph, according to reports that cite The Guardian. The collision will create a new crater and eject a plume of material that could be observable from Earth for several days.

This will be the second known instance of a launch vehicle fragment hitting the Moon in recent years; in 2022 a piece of a Chinese rocket struck the far side of the Moon. Both events highlight the growing challenge of managing space debris that can eventually intersect lunar orbits.

Experts note that after a launch’s primary mission, the remaining rocket stages can be directed into a heliocentric “graveyard” orbit with a small final burn, reducing the chance of accidental lunar impacts. The forthcoming impact offers scientists a chance to study the effects of high‑speed debris on the Moon’s surface, information that could be relevant for future human outposts.

While the event is expected to be visually striking, it also underscores the need for better tracking of objects that may pose risks to lunar infrastructure. Industry observers suggest that more rigorous end‑of‑mission disposal plans may become standard practice as commercial activity in cislunar space expands.
