Study Finds Hidden Archaic Human DNA in All Modern People

Researchers at the University of California, Berkeley have identified genetic material in contemporary humans that originates from at least two previously unknown archaic hominin groups. By scanning the human genome for segments that do not match any known species such as Neanderthals, Denisovans, Homo erectus or Homo floresiensis, the team mapped regions that appear to come from “ghost” ancestors—lineages for which no fossil record exists.

According to co‑author Yulin Zhang, the analysis indicates that one of these unidentified groups interbred with ancestors of modern humans in Africa no later than 50,000 years ago. The same lineage is thought to have diverged from the modern human branch roughly 800,000 years earlier, suggesting a long, separate evolutionary history before the gene flow event.

The researchers say the ghost ancestry is not confined to African populations; the same DNA fragments were detected across diverse modern groups worldwide. This expands earlier suggestions of unknown archaic contributions, confirming that such genetic input is a universal component of the human genome.

The findings build on a growing body of work that uses ancient DNA to reconstruct human evolution, complementing discoveries of known interbreeding events with Neanderthals and Denisovans. While the study provides genomic evidence of these hidden lineages, the lack of fossil remains means their physical characteristics and cultural practices remain speculative.
